5 Ways Inclusion Supercharges Performance – and Why Ignoring It Can Cost You

If you’ve worked in or around leadership for any length of time, you’ve probably heard the phrase, “Our people are our most important asset.” It’s well intentioned… but only half true. People can be your biggest advantage – but only when the environment around them enables them to thrive.

That’s where inclusion comes in.  Not as a program. Not as a policy. But as a lived experience, every day.

When culture is inclusive, people feel safe to speak up, take smart risks and contribute fully. When it’s not, even the most talented teams struggle.

At The Fair Co., we see this every day in the organisations we support. Inclusion is the most reliable lever leaders can pull to unlock performance. And the data backs it up. The Diversity Council Australia Inclusion@Work Index shows that inclusive teams are 10 times more likely to innovate and 8 times more likely to work effectively together. People in inclusive settings are also 3 times less likely to leave.

So what does inclusion actually do inside a business? And how does it transform performance across teams?

Here are five ways inclusion supercharges performance:

  1. Inclusion boosts innovation

When people feel safe to share new ideas, challenge thinking and admit mistakes, innovation accelerates. Inclusion removes the fear that stifles creativity. People contribute and test ideas more confidently, and teams with diverse perspectives solve problems more effectively and creatively.

  1. Inclusion strengthens collaboration and trust

You can feel the difference in an inclusive team. Meetings flow. Conversations are more open. People listen to understand, not to win. Collaboration improves because people feel respected and valued – and when communication is better, performance almost always follows.

  1. Inclusion reduces turnover costs and protects talent

Workplaces with inclusive cultures that encourage voice and participation have 33% lower employee turnover, saving mid-to-large organisations millions each year [dca.org]. Lack of inclusion creates frictions like misunderstandings, exclusion and bias that push good people out. Inclusive cultures reduce these friction points, helping people stay longer and contribute more consistently – saving organisations time, money and talent.

  1. Inclusion removes barriers that slow people down

When workplaces are set up with fairness in mind – clear pathways, transparent decisions, flexibility and accessible systems – people have what they need to do their best work. Inclusion removes the everyday hurdles that slow teams down, and when those barriers disappear, productivity naturally improves. And with work–life balance now a major reason people stay in a role, inclusive practices that adapt to people’s needs helps, teams stay engaged, effective and performing well.

  1. Inclusion creates the conditions for sustainable performance

This was a standout theme at the recent Ron McCallum Debate. Fairness and inclusion are not “nice to haves”; they are essential for productivity over time. When people feel psychologically safe, valued and treated fairly, they don’t just perform well today – they perform well consistently.

So what does this mean for leaders?

Inclusion isn’t complicated. It’s about being a good human, consistently. Leaders who listen deeply, act with fairness, stay curious, embrace difference and show courage create workplaces where people can bring their whole selves – and their best work.

Small, everyday behaviours make a big difference:

  • Challenge your own assumptions
  • Remove barriers that hold people back
  • Celebrate differences as strengths
  • Keep learning about culture, bias and inclusive practice
  • Build systems that support fairness across the employee experience

Inclusion isn’t laminated. It’s lived.

Our commitment

At The Fair Co., we believe inclusion changes everything – not just for individuals, but for teams and entire organisations. When workplaces are designed with fairness at their centre, work works better for people. And when work works for people, productivity follows.
